Understanding Social media marketing, SEO and content marketing
You may be familiar with the phrases social media marketing, content marketing and SEO but could you tell the difference? All are part of an online marketing strategy and interlinked but the main differences are:
Social Media Marketing
Social media marketing is using the various social media platforms to engage with their audience in conversation. For example on Facebook you can set up a Facebook Business page like Red Desk VA and post information about your business, related industry content or other items of interest. The ultimate idea is to spark conversations, gain likes and shares then these posts will appear in the newsfeeds of fans of the business page and their friends.
The magic word here is “social” – you are marketing and directing traffic to your website but in a non-pushy way.
Red Desk VA have written several other articles on this topic: Red Desk’s social media setup guide, about social media dashboards and the possibilities of social media.
SEO
SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is the most technical type of online marketing. In short, you are doing everything you can to please Google (other search engines are available!).
Search engines rank website content depending on the number of links from external websites and the number of relevant keywords on the website. This in turn affects the visibility of how far up the search you appear in the search engine’s unpaid results. This is often termed as “organic” or “natural” results.

Content Marketing
Content marketing is a strategic marketing approach that creates and distributes relevant, informative and sometimes entertaining content to the target audience. The aim is to be the expert in your field or “go-to”, whilst increasing brand awareness but without scaring off your audience with heavy advertising messages.
At Red Desk VA, we write content for our clients for social media posts & blogs as part of our content marketing strategy. In fact, we were a finalist in the UK Blog Awards 2014 for one of our client’s blogs. Content can also be videos and infographics.
SEO should always be considered when writing content, ensuring you are also including your keywords from your website throughout your social media.

At Red Desk VA, we provide online marketing solutions for small businesses using a combination of social media marketing, content marketing and SEO. We tailor each campaign depending on the client’s needs and can focus on one particular aspect if needed.
Red Desk’s Social Media Setup Guide
Red Desk offers content-based social media management. This means we work with our client to gain a good understanding their business & goals therefore helping us to better reflect their business in their social media.
We adopt the same approach with each client in order to create a tailor made social media plan. We therefore decided it would be useful to lay out the process step by step to give a better understanding of how we work. Welcome to Red Desk’s social media setup guide.
1. Research
Following the initial enquiry we will spend some time looking at the online presence the client already has, if any. We will also do some research into similar businesses to give us a better understanding of the types of social media that would be most effective.
2. Client Meeting
The next stage is to arrange a client meeting in person or virtually if preferred, now we can find out, in depth, about the company or service, including their brand & USPs (unique selling points). This is a good time to discuss which social media platforms would work best given the business & how much the client wants to input themselves in the social media.
3. Social Media Plan
We then spend some time putting together a social media plan, we look in-detail at what needs to be achieved in the initial set up & then a monthly plan. In doing this we are able to give a costing, broken down into the first initial set up & then a monthly fee, if the client wants continued support. We can of course set up the social media then hand over to the client with some training if required.
4. Client Agreement
Once the client is happy with the social media plan we then draw up a Letter of Engagement & Terms Document which both parties sign, this ensures professionalism & confidentiality as all times.
5. Project Management
A small dedicated team work on the client’s social media. We use an online project management tool to allow us to collaborate virtually. As part of the on going social media management we can provide a monthly status report drawn from Google Analytics & the social media platforms. allowing the client to be kept up to date with progress.
We endeavour to offer a very personalized service which will differ in requirement for each client.
